About Brenda and Flowers of the Field

Brenda Visser got into flowers during a difficult time in her life. Fresh flowers on her kitchen table sparked something that told her to hold on, keep going, and that life was good - a feeling she has spent the years since trying to pass on to others. That belief became Flowers of the Field, the floriculture farm Brenda founded in 2017 just north of Maitland.

Growing across both open fields and a winterized greenhouse lets Brenda bring fresh cut tulips to market as early as February, well ahead of most local growers, alongside potted tulips, hyacinth, and daffodils, and field-grown peonies, lilies, sunflowers, and gladiola through the season. Flowers are available directly from the farm and at the Brockville and Ottawa Farmers' Markets.

Brenda brings real horticultural depth to the business: a Master Gardener program through Dalhousie University, Landscape Design training from the University of Guelph, and years spent managing garden centres in Nova Scotia and Ontario and teaching Horticulture at St. Lawrence College. She is also a board member of the Association of Specialty Cut Flower Growers Research Foundation and a freelance writer with more than 100 published articles.

What Sets Flowers of the Field Apart

Year-Round Growing

Open fields plus a winterized greenhouse mean fresh cut tulips as early as February - a much longer season than most local flower growers.

Formally Trained, Not Just Self-Taught

A Master Gardener program through Dalhousie University, Landscape Design training from Guelph, and years teaching Horticulture at St. Lawrence College back up every plant Brenda grows.

Award-Winning and Recognized Locally

New Business of the Year 2020 (Township of Augusta) and the Sue McLaurin Resiliency Award 2023 (Brockville Women in Business), plus features in the Ottawa Business Journal and Dutch Floral Daily.

"I recently attended Brenda’s lovely dried flower wreath making workshop. Brenda made us feel welcome and comfortable in her greenhouse and guided us patiently through the process of making our wreath. It felt great to be creative in such a peaceful and warm environment. I’m looking forward to attending more workshops. Thank you, Brenda!!"
